As you all know, last month was Travis Hessman’s last issue as the Editor-in-Chiefof New Equipment Digest. For thepast six years, he has been at thehelm, navigating NED’s course inthe manufacturing industry.
Through his time here, he hascontinuously pushed NED to be the best that itcan be, always with one thing in mind—you, thereaders. He has constantly put you first and hasmade sure that we are offering not just what youwant, but also what you need to keep your operations running.
And now that the torch has been passed to me,I plan to do the same.
When I first boarded the NED ship, I came on asa product editor, tasked with bringing you countless new pieces of equipment, gadgets, software, etc., in the hopes that they would catch your eyeand were able to help you solve problems in youroperations. Through my time I have learned a greatdeal about this industry that I was so green to,and I have watched it transform before my eyeswith innovations and marvels that I thought wereonly possible in science-fiction. In doing so, I havecome to love this industry, and I vow to continueeducating myself and our team so we can deliverthe content you need to do your jobs.
Because at its core, that’s what NED is all about:notifying you and offering insight about the latest equipment innovations and providing you real-world insights that help succeed with the constantly changing times. And these past couple ofyears have certainly been a test, highlighting areaswhere the industry needs some work and some areas that the industry does perfectly already.
The first thing I learned from Travis was “youdon’t know if it works until you try,” and I havebeen living by that wisdom and will continue to doso. While this certainly applies to life in general, Ithink it’s especially fitting for this industry that isconstantly bombarded with new products offeringnew ways of doing things. While you might haveoperations down pat, that doesn’t mean that there’snot room for improvement—and you don’t knowunless you try.
Which is why we’re going to be making somechanges to our magazine in the coming new yearthat we think will help streamline our content a bitmore while still offering the variety of products wealways have. So, stay on the lookout and I hope youwon’t be shy about letting us know if it’s working, and especially if it’s not working. Because withoutyou, we wouldn’t be here. You can drop me a lineat any time at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I hope to continue Travis’ legacy of this brandas best as I can by continuing to put you first, andI hope you’ll join me for the ride.

Smart Autonomous Vehicle
can be custom designed for specific applications
Providing a smart, flexible solution to moveproducts safely and efficiently through facilities, the Intelligent Autonomous Vehicle (IAV) usesspecialized sensors with multiple safety fields toensure the vehicle slows down, stops or speeds upwith respect to the distance of a person or object;no magnetic tape or physical guides are needed. With smarter algorithms, the IAV becomes artificially intelligent.
The IAV is designed for large payloads and follows predetermined paths to execute commandswhile maneuvering around obstacles if required. It features dynamic driving with tight turning, parallel, perpendicular, crabwalk, and zero-turnmovements. Command center software maintainsa real-time record of all IAVs in the fleet via Wi-Fior radio communication.
The vehicle is custom-designed to applicationspecifications. Optional features include a stain-less/washdown version, the capability to handleup to 17% grades, and battery hot-swap or in routeopportunity charging.
