MIT Robot Can DisinfectWarehouse Floor in 30 MinutesAteam from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intel- ligence Laboratory (CSAIL), in collaboration with Ava Robotics and the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB),designed a new robotic system that can neutralize aerosolizedforms of COVID- 19 to keep warehouse surfaces free of dropletsthat spread the virus, as reported in MIT News.
The approach uses a custom UV-C light fixture which wasdesigned at CSAIL and is then integrated with Ava Robotics’mobile robot base.
While UV-C light has proven to be effective at killing viruses and bacteria on surfaces and aerosols, it’s unsafe for humansto be exposed. Instead of the telepresence top, the team subbedin a UV-C array for disinfecting surfaces. Specifically, the arrayuses short-wavelength ultraviolet light to kill microorganismsand disrupt their DNA in a process called ultraviolet germicidalirradiation.
During tests at GBFB, the robot was able to drive by the pallets and storage aisles at a speed of roughly 0.22 miles per hour.
At this speed, the robot could cover a 4,000 sq. ft. space in GBFB’s warehouse in just half an hour. The UV-C dosage deliveredduring this time can neutralize approximately 90% of coronavi-ruses on surfaces.
New Track and Trace Standardsfor Container ShippingIn an effort to transform inefficient practices and accelerate digitalization through a unified industry effort, the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), in conjunctionwith nine ocean carrier members, developed a common setof processes, as well as data and interface standards for trackand trace. The goal is to simplify data integration with carriersand improve information quality.
The standards can be implemented by carriers, shippersand third parties to enable cross-carrier shipment tracking.
For shippers, the new standard simplifies shipment visibility across multiple carriers, enabling them to better plan andoptimize shipment handling activities.
For carriers, it unifies track and trace information sharingwith other parties, ensuring accurate and efficient communication regardless of the underlying technology or platform.
The data model ensures track and trace data definitions areconsistent for all users, leveraging any system. These definitions are based on the Industry Blueprint, published by DCSAand its carrier members in 2019, which established a consistent vocabulary and proposed a common set of industry processes. The track and trace standards are aligned with the UN/CEFACT (United Nations Center for Trade Facilitation andElectronic Business) standards to provide a global industryframework that preserves existing investments and streamlines communication among all supply chain participants.
FedEx and Microsoft Jointo Transform CommerceExpress delivery specialist FedEx and software giant Microsoft agreed to a multiyear collaboration to devel- op data analytics solutions to reinvent the most criticalaspects of the commerce experience. The solutions will bepowered by Azure and Dynamics 365.
FedEx Surround, the first solution resulting from the FedEx and Microsoft collaboration, allows anybusiness to enhance visibility into its supplychain by leveraging data to provide near-real-time analytics into shipment tracking, which will drive more precise logistics andinventory management. FedEx Surroundwill provide near-real-time insights—downto the granular level of ZIP code, for example—to shine a digital light on the progressand movement of physical inventory.
The capabilities provided by FedEx Surround will extend to any business with a supply chain and particularly those that dependon highly time-sensitive deliveries. For example, a hospital may urgently need a package to help save a life, or a part may needrapid transport to a manufacturing facility toavoid an operational shutdown.
FedEx Surround can also collect multipledata points gathered through the enhancedscanning and proprietary Internet of Things
